An Sibin is an Irish Pub which is a Live Music venue as well as special events throughout the week. WHAT DOES AN SIBIN MEAN ? An Sibin is a Gaelic name meaning the "ILLEGAL DRINKING PLACE". In Ireland in the last few hundred years a spirit (schnapps) was distilled which was illegal and still is until today. This schnapps was called Poitin. It was made from potatoes and was clear in colour. Poitin was sold in Sibins. Sibins were Illegal pubs which were normally a living room in a house where Poitin, Whiskeys and a limited variety of bottled beer were sold to a limited group of people who had to remain secretive about their place of recreation. There are about six or seven Pubs in Ireland today that we know of which are called An Sibin. They like us are all legal. However according to rumor there are two illegal Sibins operating in the city of London today and one in Northeren Ireland. It is difficult to know if these stories are true and impossible to prove because of the secrecy involved. If there are illegal Sibins operating in the Republic of Ireland it is a question we have no information on. It is also interesting to note that the word SI in Gaelic means "The little people" who inhabit the Fairy Mounds and live under the earth. These people from Irish Mythology were also a secretive people who had to go underground with the rise in power of Christianity, as if they were doing something illegal. The word Sibin means Pubs run by the SI. The SI still live in Ireland underground and pay no taxes or insurance. HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE THE NAME AN SIBIN? It is quite simple for a non Gaelic speaker, just ask yourself "Where has 'she been' drinking? " You can already say it. S spoken in Gaelic is SH.
